Step 1 is the admission that you cannot manage this on willpower alone. The official wording differs by fellowship. Read it on aa.org or in the NA literature linked from na.org. This page explains the idea in plain language. It is not the program text and not medical advice.
If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. InnerAscent is not a crisis service. See the terms.
What Step 1 is asking
Step 1 asks for honesty, not a performance. People often arrive still hoping they can control use “except on weekends,” or “only after a bad day.” The Step is the point where that bargain stops being believable.
You do not have to feel spiritual. You do not have to understand Steps 2 through 12. You do have to tell the truth about unmanageability: missed work, harm to people you love, hiding, or the simple fact that you cannot stay stopped alone.
How to start without rushing
- Read the Step in your fellowship’s own text.
- Write three concrete examples of unmanageability. Keep them private.
- Say the admission out loud to another person when you can — a sponsor is the usual person. How to find a sponsor is the next page if you do not have one.
- Go to a meeting. What happens at an NA meeting describes the room. Finding meetings near you describes how the app looks up listings.
A journal line is enough to begin: “Today I cannot manage this alone because…” Recovery journal prompts has more starters. None of them is a sponsor.
What Step 1 is not
It is not a diagnosis. It is not permission to skip meetings. It is not a public post. InnerAscent has no public recovery feed. A nickname is enough. That choice is described in how anonymity is protected.
The rest of the path is in the 12 Steps explained. Day-by-day practice is in working the Twelve Steps.
Continue Step 1 privately
InnerAscent can store Step writing on your phone and show a clean-time count from the date you set. The count is calendar days only. Try the clean time calculator if you only want the number. Android is on Google Play. The iPhone app is coming soon — leave your email. There is no web app.
Optional AI reflection can ask inventory questions. The app says it does not replace your sponsor. That limit is intentional.
